As a coach I have been frequently asked, over the years, why is it called a "meditteranean loose"
Having aquired a copy of "Archery" by Robert P Elmer that was published in 1926, on page 22 he refers to a Professor Edward S. Morse.
Professor Morse aparently published a paper in 1885 entitled "Ancient and Modern Methods of Arrow Release" and amongst his descriptions is one he calls the "Meditteranean Release".
Why?
Because it was apparently a common method of shooting used amongst the peoples who lived around the Meditteranean Sea.
How simple can it get?

Hello Dave, if you are interested, this paper (Morse) was reprinted in 2002 by the Dyfi Valley Bookshop. We have a copy here. I have no idea if there are any left or if there were more printed at a later date. I think Neil is a forum member you might like to ask him by P.M.

Many thanks for that but I managed to acquire a copy off the internet and also a copy of his later paper published in 1926.

If you are interested in other publication about arrow release, A.L. Kroeber wrote an article "Arrow Release Distributions" (Uni. of California Press, Berkeley 1927), and Clark Wissler has a chapter on arrow release in his book "The Relation of Nature to Man in Aboriginal America" (Oxford Uni. Press 1926).

Thanks for that Ole, but it was finding out who had coined the name that I found interesting and when as this was new to me and to a lot of my archery colleagues.
