The 2015 issue sounds most interesting. I will buy it as soon as it comes out on Amazon.

I finally obtained a copy of the 2015 issue. It is again an excellent issue.

I have been doing research on medieval archery competitions and have seen some examples of similar invitations. I would like to be able to set up and run a competition similar to the 1573 Frankfurt Competition that you wrote about. Is there an English translation of the text? Or lacking that would it be possible for you to tell me the basic rules for the competition as it was run. The distance, size of target, number of bolts shot, scoring, etc.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Here a short summary of the invitation for the Frankfurt 1573 Competition:

- The invitation is dated on 4. October 1573.
- Shooting Distance: 136 Ellen (ca. 72 m. I was corrected that an Elle is 0,54728 m so that the real distance is ca. 74,5 m).
- Diameter of the Target: 140 mm
- Maximum Bolt diameter: 13 mm
- All Bolts used during Competition have to be watched and signed by the Competitions writer.
- Each marksman has 20 shots.
- Shooting only allowed with "freischwebendem Arm" (freely suspended arm).
- All bows on the crossbows used have to be protected with cords.
- If some parts on the crossbow are breaking (i.e. nut), it is possible to make another shot.
- It is only possible to shot when the clock is running (that means that the time for doing the 20 shots is limited).

Our friend A. Bichler (see also his article in the Jahrblatt 2015) has arranged a Competition in 15th century style in August 2015 in the castle of Puchberg (Austria). It must have been a great session, Bichler reports about this incredible meeting in the next issue of the Jahrblatt.

Best wishes

Greetings Jens

Thank you for your response. It will be most helpful in setting up my competition.

I do have some additional questions about it. Did they take turns, each shooting one bolt, or did each crossbowman shoot all their bolts one after the other? Was the scoring one point for a hit to the scoring area of the target? Did they all shoot at the same target or were there separate target faces for each crossbowman? How much time was allowed for the twenty bolts to be shot? (I have seen illustrations of matches with an hour glass for timing.)

Was the 1573 competition typical for other competitions around this time?

When will the next issue of "Jahrblatt" be out? I am looking forward to seeing Bichler's article on his shoot.

Thank you very much for your information.

Happy New Year to your and yours.
