Italian Crossbow Federation target and bench rest
Does anyone know if the bench rest style large crossbow and their bench rests currently used by the Italian Crossbow Federation were used before 1600? Also, were the conical targets they now use, used before 1600? I have tried to find references on this but have no success.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Some porcupine, interesting. Do you know where in Italy and when this shooting takes place? Sorry, but I cannot help you with your question. Good to see someone else posting pictures also. Oddbjørn.

The picture shows crossbowmen from Gubbio in Umbria/Italy (the "Palio della Balestra"), which takes place the last sunday in may every year. Ole

Re: Italian Crossbow Federation target and bench rest
I got in touch with Federazione Italiana Balestrieri - they confirmed that bench rest style large crossbow was already in use during Middle Age (1100 - 1200). On the other hand they told me that the conical target was not used in Middle Ages. This kind of target is called "corniolo" (=dogwood) ot "tasso (=yew). The Federazione Italiana Balestrieri is also on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Federazi ... 6718640673Since I suppose there may be some "linguistic" gap between you and them, I am of course available as translator, if needed. I hope this contribution helps.

Re: Italian Crossbow Federation target and bench rest
Latest update by the Federazione Italiana Balestrieri concerning the conical target. Actually they don't know exactly when this kind of target has been introduced, but they think it dates back to some 50 years, considering that regular competitions of bench rest crossbows began in that period. This target is used only for individual competitions. For team competitions they use targets such as those in use in bow archery all around the world.

Re: Italian Crossbow Federation target and bench rest
Thank you. That was most helpful. Would it be possible to ask them what types and sizes of target were used in the medieval period? I think it likely that types and sizes varied from place to place as well as the size. But I would like to know if there is a period source as to what was used. Thank you for your help. I just put the question on their facebook wall. Let's wait for an answer...
