Crossbow with lever on the side.
I recently visited the museum in Crecy En Ponthieu in Normandy.
They had a replica of a crossbow with the release lever situated on the right side of the stock, and not on the underside, I have never seen that before.
Does anyone have any information on such a crossbow. The museum attendant spoke very little English and I speaking no French made it impossible to find out if the replice was correct. The crossbow itself looked like the standard type with a revolving nut. The nut was mede of steel and the bow was also steel. Oddbjørn.

Did you get a picture of it by any chance? *crosses fingers*
I've never heard or seen anything like it before. How many axles?

Stupid of me, but I did not take any photos.
On the outside it looked just like an ordinary crossbow with a revolving nut and a steel bow, but the realease lever was located on the right side, that is looking from the rear side of the crossbow. I tried to ask the museum attendant about it, but due to language difficulties i did not get any wiser.
It was obviously a replica, a little crudely made, I would say.
I did not notice the axles. They also had a Yew longbow made by a local bowmaker, strange thing. It was made from Yew heartwood with no sapwood, and standing year rings. It had a very deep cross section with the belly comming to a pointed ridge, don`t think it would last if put to use.
