Post Steel Bows
Apart from one article by D Elmy in the Journal, I believe in 1969, have there been any other articles published about steel bows?
I am looking into their history and when they were made and by whom.
I know Seefab in Sweden and Accles & Pollock in England made steel bows in the 1930'3 and 1940's respectively, and I have found information that India made steel bows in the 1500's.
Any further information would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

Elmer in Target Archery [1946] discusses steel bows on pgs. 75 and 259-67. Perhaps you already have consulted this reference.

Dave; German traditional archery magazine "Traditionell Bogenschiessen" (www.bogenschiessen.de) recently featured a three piece series about steel bows (issues 47-49, 2008).

Manufacturers mentioned there apart from SEEFAB and APOLLO are CHIC and HOWE (both late 19th c.), H. M. WILCOX (patented in 1927), the True Temper bow by "The American Fork and Hoe Company" (1928-1932) and Clarence W. Grimes who in 1952 presented an aluminium bow.
More steel and aluminium bows were made by Frederickson ("Game Master"), Ivanhoe, Sederquist, the Park Tool & Die Co. in Jackson/Michigan ("Par X Bow") and Wham-O Powermaster Co.
Also mentioned is a singular and curious Sioux steel bow and one example from India.

G.N. Pant only marginally mentions Indian (Moghul) steel bows in his book "Indian Archery" but there are some b/w illustrations in the plates.

An interesting specimen of Damascus steel in the Knife Museum Seoul/South Korea is discussed here.

I hope this helps. If you're interested in acquiring the TB issues mentioned, please try the above link. In case of problems please get in touch with me, I will try to facilitate.

Best wishes from Germany,
Jan

WOW!!!
Thanks for all that information Jan. It is certainly far more than I had already been able to find out and gives me a lot more research to do.
Should I need any more help I will certainly contact you.
Many thanks
Dave

just a passing comment. I have recently acquired an original Apollo steel string. A formidable piece of kit capable of not only damaging the epidermis on contact, but of actually removing bits of it !. Understandably it had a short existence on the scene.

I have an old steel Mughal bow that is still shootable and have examined quite a few in the Grayson Collection and in another member's collection. If you want a photograph let me know.

Kay Koppedrayer wrote and article in the Journal about archery training in Southern India where she described steel bows being used in training.

Many thanks to all of you for replying to my original post.
Just to let you know, that I have now finished the article I was writing and have submitted it to the Journal.
Hopefully for publication later this year.
Regards
Dave
