The Book of King Modus

Postby Dave Egalton » Sun Nov 04, 2012 3:13 pm

In some research I have been doing, I came across a reference to the Book of King Modus written in French, by Henry de Ferrieres.
Apparently it was the first printed book that was written about hunting with a chapter on how to shoot a bow and arrow and was published in about 1359 AD.
I have managed to get a part translation of the chapter and have managed to get an e-book copy of the original book.
My question is, does anyone know of a full english translation :?:
"I can't" -does nothing
"I'll try" - does something
"I WILL" - WORKS WONDERS

Hello Dave, There are bits of this book translated by Walrond, in the archer's register under L'art d'Archerie

It is also possible that the author of "Master of Game" drew upon Modus for much of his work

Hope this helps

Thanks Hugh, unfortunately my french is virtually non existant.
I do have various translations in part from other books, I was just curious is a full translation in english existed.

Chapter 5 in Hansard's "The Book of Archery" (1841) contains a more or less complete English translation of the Book of King Modus:

Many thanks Jan, and all the others, I did manage to find what I wanted and confirmed what I was researching at the time.
Best regards

Jan - Thanks for the info on "The Book of King Modus" -- I never thought to look in Hansard's "Archery" --very helpful information! I have a copy of "Le Livere Du Roy Modus et De La Royne Racio, Nouvelle Editon" Published in Paris, 1839, and, of course, my French translation abilities are non-existent. Thanks also to Dave Egalton and Hugh Soar -- I enjoyed this topic!
