Re: Berkshire Archery Society

Generally I would say that the only time a name would change would be when a club or Society folded and was then later revived. The use of Society tended to be in earlier days with the use of club being more modern. However the use of just Archers extends over a long period . I cannot say which grou...

Re: Arrow manufacture

There is some info in Hugh's book Straight and True - some of which is from a very old tome which is actually about heraldry, but in which the author moves on from the charges on escutcheons to details of these items in real life. It is a difficult tome (and I use that word advisedly) to get hold of...

Re: Ancient Greek shooting position

I am putting a short piece in the next Arrowhead on this subject, as I cannot equate the kneeling positions of various statues (or reproductions of statues) with the report of Herodotus on how "the natives" shot their bows.

Robert Hardy dies

Robert Hardy CBE- known to his friends as Tim - was famous for a myriad of appearances in films, TV and on stage. He was also well known for the work he did with the archery artefacts of the Tudor warship Mary Rose . His first book "Longbow" was, at the time, the definitive book on the sub...

Re: Royal Edinburgh Archers?

Ron - I am so sorry that no-one has answered your query. I can tell you that this WAS an alternative name for the Royal Company, You can find a great deal about the Company and it's names in our "Archery Societies and Clubs " booklet. Your button was almost certainly for un-dress use, as t...

Sad loss

Once again I am sorry to have to report the loss of another stalwart member. Mr Ken Arton - who was until last year our revered President - has died after a long period in hospital. Well known in wider archery circles, he will be missed by many. There are no close family members known to us. Adminis...

Forum changes

Hello everybody I hope you are not too put out by the sudden change. We have been updated to the latest version and the colour scheme has not yet been sorted out. However I think you will find that most other things are much the same.

Re: Ancient Greek shooting position

Stephen, I am afraid your image was nowhere to be found; however I think we are all aware of the stance to which you refer - and you are right, it is a puzzle. Having said that there are many stances throughout history which to our eyes look decidedly odd. One which comes to mind appeared (I think) ...

Is anyone in touch with Metin Ates in Turkey? His latest copy of the Arrowhead was returned. The address we has used was slightly different to the one on his website "Turkish Archery" but since all other Arrowheads arrived with him we now wonder if he has moved. I have e-mailed him using t...

Re: Pacific Cultures

How very nice. Because the bow was not developed in Australia, we tend to forget that there are many places close by where it was a way of life. We look forward to learning what you can discover - and perhaps you might be able to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) and write a little something ...

Re: An easier way to post pictures on a forum.

Oh dear, I am afraid this is a bit too technical for me. To be honest, the forum is so little used, and I think that most SAA members are not likely to use this facility.
